About

Hello,

My name is Emi Goswami.  I am thrilled and honored to be serving as the chair for the Economic and Finance Committee for the 2022-2023 school year.  I am a rising senior at New Providence High School, so this will be my 4th and final year participating in the Model United Nations.

Outside of participating in Model United Nations, I am

also on my highschool’s tennis, swim, and golf team.  I

also am the President of the Student Council, Japanese

Club, and National Honor Society at my school.

A fun fact about me is that I am scared of butterflies and ambidextrous!

Prompt #1

Create and Reflect Upon SMART goals. Why does reaching your goals matter to you?”

1.    Encourage delegates to speak their mind at conferences.

As a freshman, I attended the Model United Nations Conference for the first time, and in person.  I was afraid to speak up even when I had something to say.  My officer at the time kept encouraging others to speak, and I finally found my voice.  On the final day of the conference, the chair wrote a Character Development Award to me to exclaim the joy he felt when I spoke up and had great ideas to bring to the table involving my country.  I felt a sense of accomplishment as I received a small, but special award and felt that I had done something as a delegate.  This is a feeling all delegates should get to experience during their conference.

2.    Make lasting relationships with other officers

Having a close knit group of friends you can count on is important to me.  I get to be a part of an experience that involves students from all different backgrounds and schools in New Jersey, and have similar interests in Model United Nations just as I do.  I can stay in contact so in the future I have an ongoing dialogue about ideas and issues regarding Model United Nations as well as a lasting friendship.

3.   Gain more knowledge about current events.

Today, I believe it is important to know about current events and stay up to date with them in our society today, as they can affect each individual greatly.  From learning about each country and their problems they are aiming to resolve in Model United Nations, I can gain more awareness of what is going on not only within the United States, but as well as other countries throughout the world.  I plan to keep up with news periodicals.

Prompt #2

What did you learn about your fellow officers from the Group Y-PAL exercise? What did you learn about yourself from the exercise? How did you guys bond? Do you share any of the same goals? Is there anything unique that connects all of you?

My Y-Pals were Eric, Nathan, and Kristen.  We Facetimed for several hours chatting about anything that happened to come into our minds.  I especially found that we all LOVE Mario Kart, consisting of our group picture of different “Yoshi's".  We discussed our similarities and differences all the way from the language we take in school to our favorite shows.  Overall, I learned a lot about several of my officers and cannot wait to get to know them more throughout our Model United Nations journey together.

Prompt #3

What do the topics you are proposing for your committee mean to you personally?  Why do you care about them?  Why do they matter to you as a person?

The potential topics Alexa and I have thought of so far are climate change as an economic impact and cryptocurrency.

Climate change:  By informing individuals about climate change, we can work to prevent and stop the fast pace at which global warming is occurring.  Climate change harms the economy through conflicts such as health effects and food security.  Not only that, but climate change significantly harms another living species, animals.  The rising sea levels and melting glaciers greatly harm animals and destroy their homes.  It is important to understand this topic as we each have one Earth, and must learn to protect it.

Cryptocurrency:  I found this topic interesting, as I learned and researched about countries involved with this current topic.  I believe this topic will spark delegates' curiosity and allow them to learn new things involving cryptocurrency and their country.  There are also many adverse effects of cryptocurrency that are important to talk about.  There are drug dealing payments involving cryptocurrency, terrorism, establishing cryptocurrency as the most prevalent cause for illegal activity.  There needs to be cooperation across borders and countries in order to prevent these attacks.  Cryptocurrency allows individuals to engage in illegal activity but at the same time it allows countries with undeveloped banking to store value and transact in relatively stable currency.

Prompt #4

Reflect on the process of giving and receiving peer feedback to other officers. What was it like for you to give constructive feedback to help someone else? What was it like to receive it?

I enjoyed the process as I got to learn more about the different topics that were chosen from other groups while giving constructive feedback on their work.  I want every officer to succeed and I’m always willing to help out and make others' work even better.  Although taking comments about your work is hard, I think the feedback was informative and helped me realize what I could do better regarding my topic descriptions.

Prompt #5

What do you think your strengths are as a leader, officer, and as a person? Give specific examples of how your strengths have helped you, and how you think you can use them as an officer in MUN, and in your life moving forward.

As a leader, officer, and as a person, I believe my strengths are being hardworking and kind.  My kindness has led me to build lasting friendships and helped me attain multiple leadership roles in my school.  I am a hardworker, as even if I do poorly on an assignment I continue to strive to do better, study more, and work even harder to get the grade I want.  I use these skills in tennis as I am a teammate and captain.  If I’m down in a set, I focus on what I could do better, make the changes, and win the set.  I can use these skills as an officer in Model United Nations as I help fellow officers with assignments and be kind to every officer and delegate.

Prompt #6

What are some of your weaknesses or areas of improvement? Why do you think these are weaknesses or areas of improvement? Do you think having these weaknesses is a bad thing? Why or why not?

A weakness I have is organization.  I typically tend to be disorganized when it comes to my room or organizing my school work.  I think this weakness is bad as organization definitely makes one more successful at things, and you can find items more easily!

Prompt #7

Prompt 7: Reflect on the Working with Diverse Backgrounds Activity from our meeting. How will you use what you learned from this activity as a leader during the conference?

As one of the few Asian Americans and of multiple cultures at my highschool, there are times when I feel like I cannot relate to others, and they cannot relate to me.  I have received comments where people will say straight to my face that my culture does not get along with theirs, therefore they cannot hang out with me or join a cultural club.  Regardless, I find pride in having two unique backgrounds and always feel a rush of excitement when people are intrigued to learn more about my cultures, especially when it comes to the Japanese Club at our school, rising to 90 members.  Over the years I have gained friends who like me for who I am, and are interested in my cultures.  During the conference, I will make sure every delegate has someone to work with and nobody is ever left out.
